Here at City Block we know that many of students suffer from the big ‘P’, that’s right, procrastination. Everyone has the urge to procrastinate and it’s understandable, who wants to do work when there’s so much fun to be had?! However, if you want to succeed at university you need to overcome procrastination and get your work/revision done. Don’t worry though, many students struggle with this, so we’ve come up with 5 top tips that will help you in your quest to defeat the urge to procrastinate.
1. Do It Now
If you’re dreading doing a piece of work, bite the bullet and do it first thing in the morning. If you don’t you will come up with a whole array of creative excuses and even clean your room to avoid doing it and guess what, you’ll still have to do the work after that dastardly task but under more pressure! Be strict with yourself.
2. Study in Groups
When you work with people you are more likely to be motivated to do the work. Head to the library with your flatmates or other students from your course, plus if you get stuck you can ask for help – 2 brains are better than one. Take breaks together then get back to the books and study! study! study!
3. The ‘To-Do’ List
Write a ‘to-do’ list, having a plan of action will help you to remain organised throughout the day. Schedule an hour of work then maybe a 30 minute break, if you spread your work or revision throughout the day you can have an excellent work/play balance, it will also help you to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
4. Reward Yourself
Promise yourself a lovely reward for when you have finished the task it could be anything from your favourite cheese cake to a night out with your friends – with something positive to look forward to you’re bound to get your work done.
5. Banish Distractions
If you’re working on a computer it’s very tempting to have a quick browse on Facebook or Twitter for 5 minutes, now you know that 5 minutes can easily become an hour or more, so whilst working you should disconnect and turn your mobile data off while you’re at it. If you require the internet for research then do it on a previous day then set yourself a internet-free time period, similar to exam conditions to get the work done.
